Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
Used to reduce pain using an electrical current produced by a radio wave to heat up a small area of nerve tissue, in order to decrease pain signals from that specific area.
Caudal ESI
Includes injecting both a long-lasting steroid and an anesthetic into the epidural space where the irritated nerve roots are located. The steroid reduces inflammation and irritation, while the anesthetic interrupts the pain-spasm cycle.
Interlaminar ESI
Relatively painless needle based procedure typically used to help reduce inflammation and irritation around specific nerves in the neck, mid- back or lower back.
Cervical ESI
Injections administered to relieve pain in the beck, shoulders and arms caused by a pinched nerve or inflamed nerve(s) in the cervical spine.
Major Joint Injection
An injection of local anesthetic and steroid deposited into the joint space or capsule; the goal is to provide pain relief by reducing inflammation due to arthritis of the involved joint.
SCS Permanent Placement
Only after a successful SCS Trial, a permanent device will then be implanted into the spine. This device consists of small wires (which are inserted between the vertebrae and the spinal cord) and a small battery pack (similar to a pacemaker’s, which is located just under the skin.) The device allows patients to send low electrical impulses by using a remote control (located outside of the body) whenever pain is felt.
Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS) Trial
A temporary device is inserted into the spine within the epidural space using a hollow needle. The device will send a small amount of electricity directly to the spine to help relieve severe pain. After evaluation, the trial is considered successful if overall pain has reduced by 50% or more.
Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injection (ESI)
An injection of long acting steroid into the opening of the side of the spine where a nerve roots exits. This opening is known as a foramen. There is a small sleeve of the epidural space that extends out over the nerve root for a short distance.
Regenerative Medicine
Discover the innovative, self-healing powers hidden within your own body through advanced regenerative therapies! Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections harness your own platelets to accelerate healing and alleviate pain in various joints. Bone Marrow Aspirate taps into your bone marrow’s pluripotent stem cells, offering another level of regenerative assistance, while Amniotic Fluid Injections utilize potent growth factors and specialized cells to guide tissue regeneration and pain management. Don’t merely manage pain—invoke your body’s innate healing powers and explore a world where science propels recovery; contact a specialist today!
Amniotic Fluid Injections
Amniotic fluid, often times used for pain management, contains a measurable concentration of various growth factors that stimulate and facilitate tissue healing and regeneration. Cytokines are special proteins that communicate with tissues in various capacities. These mechanisms often lead to a reduction in inflammation and pain. There are a variety of cells present in the amniotic fluid but the two that have the best therapeutic potential in regenerative medicine are amniotic fluid mesenchymal stem cells (AFMSC) and amniotic epithelial cells (AEC).
Platelet Rich Plasma injection
Prepared from one to a few tubes of the patient’s own blood with strict aseptic technique, the blood is centrifuged, then the activated platelets are injected into the abnormal tissue, releasing growth factors that recruit and increase the proliferation of reparative cells. PRP Injections can improve function and decrease pain to various maladies including, but not limited to, elbow, wrist, shoulder, hip, knee and ankle Tendinosis.
Bone Marrow Aspirate Injections
BMC works similarly to Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) by using growth factors to help the body heal itself. However, BMC goes a step further by using regenerative cells found in the patient’s own bone marrow. The bone marrow contains pluripotent stem cells that can be taken from the patient’s hip bone and used for the procedure. Unlike other cells in the body, stem cells are undifferentiated, which means they can reproduce into different types of tissue.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
When would be a good time to see our pain management specialists?
It’s a good time to seek a pain management specialist when pain does not respond to usual treatments within a reasonable amount of time. Often people see pain management as a last resort for pain, instead of a first stop on the road to total body care.
There are several complexities to pain management, recognized as a separate medical subscpecialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Physicians choosing to specialize in pain medicine must now complete a one-year multidisciplinary pain fellowship in addition to successful completion of four years of medical school and four years of anesthesiology residency or appropriate residency training in physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology or psychiatry.
